It takes enormous amounts of diesel to keep our buses going every day – not just for them to be driving but also to generate power for all the bus’s functions. Unfortunately, diesel is expensive and has a vast impact on our operating costs and our CO2 emissions.
It’s time to start thinking of alternative and green solutions – and to accommodate this challenge, Solarbus.pro has developed a ground-breaking solution – the CIGS plug-and-play solar cell solution designed particularly for bus roofs. By installing solar cells on the top of buses, we can guarantee a significant reduction in the annual diesel consumption. But it doesn’t stop there. The solution also reduces the wear on the buses’ batteries and generators, reducing the CO2 emission significantly.
Our plug-and-play solar cell solution consists, amongst other things, of lightweight CIGS solar cells that are thinner and more flexible than traditional types of solar cells. Their thickness is 3 mm and a weight of only 2.2 kg per sq.m. This makes them ideal for energy-effective transport and makes it possible to install directly on the bus without drilling holes.
Another advantage is that the robust CIGS panels are resilient to vibrations because they’re made of a thin film material without the risk of micro-cracks or hotspots. This contributes to maintaining their effectiveness and eliminates a potential fire hazard.

Our solar cells are far less vulnerable to shade, which ensures optimal operation in busy city environments where shade is usually unavoidable. When conventional solar cells enter the shade, even with a fraction, they shut down completely. This is not the case with the Solarbus solar cells. The same thing goes for minor damages to the solar cells where the solution still functions as opposed to traditional solutions that can’t produce power with damaged solar cells.
We have already done comprehensive tests in Northern countries with limited sunlight. The results are impressive. Even with far fewer sun hours than in sunny destinations like Italy, our solar cell solution can generate up to 1000 kWh of solar cell power per bus annually. This means an annual reduction of nothing less than 1000 litres of diesel annually and a CO2 emission reduction of an impressive 2.56 tons per bus.
These numbers are crucial for bus companies to understand our solar cell solution's economic and environmental advantages. Therefore, it’s unsurprising that buses worldwide are embracing our sustainable technology.
